The Dumplin’ Diaries: Mama, Jess & Jenna

There’s something about a pot of chicken n’ dumplin’s bubbling away on the stove that just feels like home. And y’all, this weekend it wasn’t just supper—it was a whole memory in the making.

I measured everything out, but Jessica and Jenna were in charge of pouring, stirring, and—heaven help us—egg cracking. (Let’s just say Nugget was on standby to lick up any casualties.) When it came time to drop the dumplin’s, those girls took turns scooping dough like it was the most important job in the world. And to them, it was. They were so proud when the whole bowl was empty, standing on tiptoes at the stove, stirring like pros and checking to see if the dumplin’s were ready.

Meanwhile, I was shredding chicken, popping biscuits in the oven, and quietly soaking up every single second. The kitchen smelled amazing, but honestly? The best part was their giggles, the flour on their little noses, and the fact that—for once—there were no distractions.

Maybe I’m just being sentimental, but I swear these were the best dumplin’s I’ve ever had. And it wasn’t because of the recipe—it was because of who was standing beside me at the stove. I’m definitely planning more days like this, because this is the good stuff. This is what they’ll remember. And so will I.
