Mom Hack: Automate the Things That Repeat

If you’re repeatedly telling yourself:

Don’t forget trash day.

Don’t forget to order dog food.

Don’t forget library day.

Don’t forget to pay that bill.

Don’t forget to tell everybody it’s bedtime.

there’s probably a system that can remember at least part of it for you.

The Hack

Look for repeat offenders in your mental load.

Then automate one.

That might mean:

Recurring phone reminders for library books.

Recurring calendar events for practices.

Automatic household deliveries for things you reliably use.

Auto-pay for appropriate recurring bills.

Alexa routines for bedtime.

Recurring grocery items/orders for household staples.

You don’t need to spend a weekend “automating your life.”

Please don’t turn this into another project.

Pick the thing that makes you say:

“Why do I have to keep remembering this?”

Start there.

My Favorite Automation Question

Whenever something repeats, ask:

“Does a human actually need to remember this?”

Sometimes the answer is yes.

But surprisingly often?

Nope.
