The School Apps Are Taking Over My Life (And I Have Thoughts)
A few weeks ago, I thought I was reasonably organized.
Then school started.
Now I have approximately 47 apps on my phone, 13 passwords I can’t remember, and enough notification badges to make me question every life choice that brought me to this moment.
Y’all, I swear I downloaded more apps during Back-to-School season than I did during the entire pandemic.
There’s an app for lunch accounts.
An app for classroom communication.
An app for school-wide announcements.
An app for attendance.
An app for after-school programs.
An app for transportation.
An app for volunteering.
An app that seems to exist solely to remind me that another app exists.
And somehow every single one of them needs a different password.
I started the school year feeling pretty confident. I’d bought the backpacks, labeled the water bottles, stocked the snacks, filled out the forms, and entered every important date into my calendar.
Then the emails started.
“Please download the app.”
“Please join the class.”
“Please verify your account.”
“Please update your preferences.”
“Please turn on notifications.”
At one point, I wasn’t sure if I was enrolling my children in school or applying for a security clearance.
The funniest part is that every app has a different personality.
One sends messages in all caps that make me think school is closed due to an alien invasion.
Another quietly slips important information into a feed that I won’t discover until three days later.
One sends seventeen notifications a day.
Another waits until 9:47 p.m. to tell me something I needed to know at 2:00 p.m.
It’s like managing a group project where nobody communicates the same way.
And don’t even get me started on the login process.
Nothing humbles a grown woman faster than trying to remember which password contains an exclamation point, a capital letter, a special character, your first pet’s name, and the blood type of your favorite middle school teacher.
Last week I spent ten minutes trying to log into the wrong school app before realizing I was in the lunch account portal.
I wish I could say this only happened once.
Meanwhile, my girls are thriving.
Jessica walks into second grade like she owns the place.
Jenna marches into kindergarten with all the confidence of someone who has never had to reset a password in her life.
The kids seem completely unfazed by the technology circus surrounding their education.
Meanwhile, I’m over here trying to determine whether the notification ding I just heard means someone forgot a lunchbox, picture day is next week, or I accidentally agreed to bring 48 cupcakes to a class party.
But here’s what I’ve learned.
Not every notification requires immediate action.
Not every message needs to be read within thirty seconds.
And sometimes it’s okay to close the apps, pour a cup of coffee, sit on the porch for five minutes, and remember that schools successfully educated children long before smartphones existed.
When the notifications start piling up and your phone begins sounding like a slot machine, give yourself a little grace.
The truth is we’re all figuring it out.
We’re trying to raise good humans while managing calendars, carpools, homework, lunch accounts, spirit days, and apparently an entire ecosystem of educational technology.
Some days you’ll stay on top of it.
Some days you’ll discover a message three days late and survive anyway.
And if all else fails, eat a piece of chocolate, reset the password, and keep moving forward.
The apps may be winning a few battles right now, but us moms? We’re still in the game.
And if your phone currently has seventeen unread school notifications, just know you’re in good company.
