Excuse Me While I Cry Into My Coffee…
Whew, y’all. Today was a day. You ever feel like your household is auditioning for a new reality show called “Who Can Break Mama First”? Because same.
Let me set the scene: the girls have not said one kind word to each other all day. I mean, not one. If I heard “Ugh!” followed by an eye roll one more time, I was about to pull out my own hair. I don’t know who told them they’re 16, but ma’am… you are 6 and 4, and your biggest worry should be which color popsicle to pick.
And Nugget—our sweet little 8 pound fur baby—has apparently realized this is a permanent living arrangement and is now testing boundaries like a toddler in a grocery store checkout line. He’s been barking, whining, grunting (I didn’t even know dogs did that??), and just flat-out arguing with me. He’s out here giving Husky drama without one drop of Husky in his DNA.
So I did what any mom holding on by a thread would do: I sent everybody to their rooms. The girls got a time-out, Nugget went to his crate, and I sat down with the intent of breathing in peace and not losing my ever-loving mind.
And then… Facebook betrayed me!!
I got one of those “On This Day” notifications, and y’all, There she was. Little chubby cheeks and baby legs that still bowed a little when she walked. My Jessica, on the day of her Preschool 2’s meet and greet. I lost it. Like, ugly crying into my lukewarm coffee lost it.
And of course that spiraled into an entire scroll down memory lane—newborn pics, first holidays, baby giggles, wobbly steps, Jessica’s Kindergarten cap and gown, last day of school in May. Cue more crying. Like, full-blown tissue pile on the floor situation.
Look, I know the days are long. They are so long. Like, drag-your-feet-through-peanut-butter long. There’s backtalk and barking and somebody always needs a snack or has to pee at the worst possible time. But y’all—this time really does fly. I blinked and my baby is reading chapter books and rolling her eyes like she invented sarcasm with Jenna following suit!
So even though today felt like a circus (and I was definitely the exhausted, underpaid ringmaster), I’m holding onto the reminder that these are the days. One day they’ll just be memories in a notification.
Give your babies an extra hug tonight—even if they were being tiny tornadoes earlier. And if you’re also typing through tears, you’re not alone. Solidarity, Mama. 💕
Lots of love and slightly tear-stained hugs,
Your sentimental, snack-hiding, eye-roll-dodging Southern Mama 💕
