Blog Post: Last First Day Feels
Y’all, today was my 4-year-old’s last first day of preschool!
We pulled into the carpool line like we’ve done so many times before, but this time, it hit different. The teacher opened the door with a warm smile, and just as my girl was about to hop out, she paused. She turned back to me, leaned in, put her little head on my shoulder, and whispered, “Love you, Mom.”
And for a split second, I very seriously considered shutting the door, flooring it, and pretending like today wasn’t happening. But alas, society frowns upon preschool kidnappings, even sentimental ones.
This is the daughter who stretches my patience to the absolute limit—like she’s earning commission on every gray hair. But she’s also the one who insists I’m the one to tuck her in. Who still wants me to be the first face she sees in the morning. Who, in her wild, fierce, funny way, still needs her mama more than she lets on.
My mama heart just can’t. Time’s moving like it’s late for church, and I’m over here trying to press the pause button with all my might. This year brings five-day preschool, three-days-a-week activities, graduation caps, and posed pictures that’ll make me cry in Target when I see them unexpectedly in my camera roll.
Today reminded me how badly I want to soak up these little moments—the unhurried hugs, the “love you Mom,” the sticky preschool kisses—before they’re just sweet memories in a baby book.
So now, I’m home. The house is quiet. And while I should be folding laundry or cleaning up whatever mystery snack is petrified in the couch cushions… I’m not. Instead, I’m mixing up a strong mimosa (because breakfast), pulling out the baby books, snuggling Nugget, and giving myself two full hours to just feel it all.
These aren’t tears, y’all. My face is just damp from this relentless Georgia humidity.
(But seriously… someone come sit on the porch and cry/mimosa with me.)
