1st Day of School Emotions
For the last two months, I’ve been getting ready for today. The backpacks. The lunchboxes. The school forms. The first day outfits. The practice lunches. The confidence talks. I measured feet. I bought shoes. I downloaded approximately seventeen school apps. Okay, maybe not seventeen, but it sure felt like it.
I checked every box. I told myself I was ready.
Then 7:00 a.m. rolled around, and bless my heart, so did all the emotions!
As I stood in the front yard taking first day pictures, it hit me. My girls aren’t babies anymore. This is the first year that neither one of them is heading off to preschool. And somehow, this is the last time I’ll ever write “First Day of Kindergarten.”
Whew! Nobody warns you about that part!!
They smiled for pictures, grabbed their backpacks, and walked into school with their friends. Barely looking back.
And while my mama heart wasn’t quite ready for that moment, I realized something. That’s exactly what I’ve been preparing them to do. To feel confident. To feel capable. To walk into new places knowing they’re loved, even when I’m not standing right beside them.
Being a mom is the wildest thing. You spend all summer counting down to the first day of school. Then one morning, you watch your whole heart walk away wearing an oversized backpack and brand new sneakers. And somehow, you’re bursting with pride and holding back tears at the exact same time.
So now, if you’ll excuse me, this Georgia mama is headed straight for an emotional support Frosted Coffee and some Chicken Minis. Because raising independent kids is beautiful.
But y’all… Nobody said I had to like how fast it happens.
Here’s to new adventures, growing wings, and mamas everywhere sitting in the car afterward trying not to cry into their breakfast.
You’re not alone. ❤️
